Relief to Refugees in Gembu-Taraba State, Nigeria
Gembu-Taraba Relief Efforts
Gembu is one of eleven jurisdictions in the Sardauna Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State in North-Eastern Nigeria and is host to over 18,000 refugees who have fled the escalating armed conflict in the Cameroons. These refugees are assessed to be some of the most neglected in terms of food assistance, and living conditions are often dehumanizing and health-threatening.
In 2021, the Atem Foundation provided food assistance to over 3,000 refugees within the Gembu region and surrounding communities, as well as critical health and sanitary items for young girls and women. Food assistance purchased by the A.F. Foundation is locally purchased and tailored to promote the local economy where possible to assist both the individual refugees and the health and prosperity of the host country.
The security situation in conflict affected communities remains precarious, and refugees continue to face nutritional challenges, exposing them to various forms of abuse. The refugee population is expected to remain stable in the near future, with the possibility of an increase if the conflict escalates.
The Atem Foundation consults and collaborates with host communities and other partners to continuously assess the situation of these people of concern and coordinate targeted responses to their needs. Current assessments of conflict and disaster situations inform AF's response to chronic malnutrition and nutrition support to people living with chronic diseases. Our food assistance program promotes local development and empowerment by leveraging local resources, increasing dietary diversity, local markets, and livelihood opportunities.
